About the position

Under the general supervision of the Director, the Reading Consultant is responsible for developing, coordinating, supporting, and evaluating the District's reading programs. The consultant serves as a resource and consultant for teaching staff to improve students' success in reading. This role includes providing direction, consultation, and coordination to ensure comprehensive and sequential curriculum and instruction in reading, conducting ongoing assessments of student learning, and assisting teachers in modifying instructional methods to fit individual student needs, including those with special needs. The consultant will document teaching and student progress, develop lesson plans, and assess and provide feedback regarding student progress and achievement. Additionally, the consultant will maintain familiarity with district and state standardized tests, provide professional development, and coordinate with other staff members regarding reading assessments and instructional strategies.

Responsibilities

  • Provides direction, consultation, and coordination for reading curriculum and instruction.
  • Conducts ongoing assessment of student learning and assists teachers in modifying instructional methods.
  • Documents teaching and student progress, develops lesson plans, and assesses student achievement.
  • Maintains familiarity with district and state standardized tests to adapt curriculum.
  • Provides professional development and cooperates with building administrators.
  • Coordinates with other professional staff regarding reading assessments and remedial techniques.
  • Organizes and maintains accurate record-keeping and reporting for student activities.
  • Maintains liaison with the State Department of Education and professional organizations.
  • Coordinates selection, inventory, and ordering of educational materials.
  • Encourages parental involvement in students' education and reading.
  • Participates in faculty meetings and committees.
  • Keeps current with developments in teaching reading and provides instructional material.
  • Continues professional knowledge through seminars, workshops, and research.

Requirements

  • State Certification as a Reading Consultant (#096, 097, 102).
  • Motor Vehicle Operator's License or ability to provide own transportation.
  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in an education discipline.
  • Master's degree preferred.
  • Successful prior teaching experience for the appropriate grade level preferred.
