About the position

The Transportation Worker I position at the Maine Department of Transportation is a full-time role focused on maintaining and improving the safety and effectiveness of roadways and bridges in Maine. This position involves a variety of tasks including road repair, culvert replacement, and snow plowing, requiring workers to adapt to seasonal changes and learn new skills. Responsibilities

  • Perform road repairs and maintenance activities.
  • Replace culverts and other infrastructure as needed.
  • Operate snow plows and other heavy equipment during winter months.
  • Work in various weather conditions to ensure road safety.
  • Participate in training programs for Commercial Driving License and snow fighting certification.
  • Obtain necessary licenses and certifications as required by the job.

Requirements

  • Must be at least 18 years of age.
  • High school diploma or equivalent is required.
  • Ability to work at a higher class as necessary and in accordance with required licenses and/or certification.
  • Must pass a state-paid medical examination including a drug test and respirator fit test.
  • Must obtain a Class C State of Maine license by the first day of employment.
  • Must obtain and retain a valid Class B State of Maine license during the initial six-month probationary period.
  • Ability to become a certified snow fighter within 12 months.
  • Ability to obtain flagger certification within a specified timeframe.
