The Transportation Planner 1 position at the Iowa Department of Transportation involves developing, organizing, and compiling programming elements for Iowa's 5-year program plan. Responsibilities

  • Review engineering estimates and update traffic data.
  • Compare development estimates with programming concepts.
  • Update and maintain a monitor listing of potential projects and program estimate changes.
  • Adjust funding to account for inflation and prepare draft programs.
  • Develop program alternatives for various funding levels.
  • Attend production schedule meetings to compile and develop an accurate highway program.
  • Compile program information from various offices within the Department and update highway program databases.
  • Assist in administering the Parks and Institutional Roads Program.
  • Ensure projects are properly programmed and agreements with other agencies are completed.

Requirements

  • Graduation from an accredited four-year college or university with a degree in civil/transportation/traffic engineering, environmental engineering, finance, business administration, supply chain management, data science, geography, economics, mathematics, community development planning, regional planning, urban planning, aviation, or transportation planning.
  • Four years of education and/or full-time experience in relevant fields, with specific work experience equating to college coursework.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience with Oracle, Access, Excel, and Masterworks databases.
  • Strong proficiency in geographic information systems (GIS).
  • Ability to work well with team members and external customers.
