About the position

The Trainer Chief Attorney at Metropolitan Public Defender Service Inc. is responsible for planning and coordinating a comprehensive training program primarily for attorneys and legal support staff. This role involves mentoring team members, including Certified Law Students, and managing a small caseload. The position emphasizes leadership, a strong work ethic, and a commitment to excellence in indigent defense.

Responsibilities

  • Plan and coordinate a robust training program for attorneys and legal support staff.
  • Mentor and train team members, including Certified Law Students.
  • Handle a caseload of approximately 0.25 of a normal caseload.
  • Research and prepare training materials, outlines, practice guides, and motions.
  • Serve as a resource to all staff, particularly staff attorneys.
  • Co-counsel cases with attorneys.
  • Assist with coverage as needed.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • Must be a current member of the Oregon State Bar in good standing or eligible for reciprocity admission.
  • Experience working in indigent criminal/juvenile defense.
  • OPDS qualified to handle misdemeanor and felony cases.
  • Ability to pass a background check to access clients and witnesses in correctional facilities.
  • Trial experience in misdemeanor and felony cases.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience in training, coaching, and supervision is highly preferred.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
