About the position

Under the direction of the Vice President of Academic Affairs, the director will provide vision, leadership, and overall management to the Learning Resources unit and the district's online learning initiatives. The Learning Resources unit comprises academic and support services, including library, distance education, testing, tutoring, and instructional design. The primary goal of Learning Resources is to promote increased student success by applying technology, training, and services that strengthen teaching and learning throughout the college.

Responsibilities

  • Plans, organizes, controls, directs, and advocates for designated operations, activities, programs, and services of the Library, Distance Education & Learning Resources Programs.
  • Selects, trains, motivates, and directs the Library, Distance Education & Learning Resources programs personnel.
  • Coordinates and directs communications, personnel, resources, curriculum, schedules, and information to meet the instructional needs of the Library, Distance Education & Learning Resources Programs.
  • Works collaboratively with faculty to develop new course curricula as needed.
  • Participates in district Curriculum Committee meetings to assist with course and program development issues related to distance learning and OER degree pathways.
  • Facilitates and supports colleges in the California Virtual Classroom Online Education Initiative (CVC-OEI) participation.
  • Works collaboratively with the college's shared governance bodies to implement and maintain an effective distance learning structure and program.
  • Provides support for deans training for online teacher evaluation.
  • Participates in the development, management, and administration of the department's annual planning and budgets.
  • Promotes and increases faculty and student use of the Library, Distance Education & Learning Resources programs.
  • Oversees the development and delivery of library reference, circulation, and instructional services.
  • Coordinates and supports initiatives promoting affordability and equity of instructional materials.
  • Works with the DE Coordinator and the DE Committee to ensure the currency of the Learning Management System (LMS).
  • Monitors and recommends solutions for the department's physical facilities, security, and technologies.
  • Assists and supports the Head Librarian and the DE Coordinator to complete local, state, and national library and distance education surveys.
  • Contributes to the overall quality of the programs' services by developing, reviewing, and implementing policies and procedures.
  • Maintains current knowledge of educational trends, innovations, and practices.
  • Provides technical information and assistance to the VPAA regarding instructional and student support services.
  • Reviews outcomes, including student learning outcomes (SLO) and assessments.
  • Provides consultation and expertise to administrators, faculty, staff, students, outside agencies, and others concerning program operations and activities.
  • Conducts various analytical and operational studies regarding Programs and programmatic activities.
  • Attends and participates in professional group meetings, various District committees, and advisory boards.
  • Maintains and directs the maintenance of working and official departmental files.
  • Prepares, reviews, and presents reports, various management and information updates.
  • Responds to complex and sensitive student and faculty inquiries and complaints.
  • Provides a working and learning environment free from prohibited discrimination, harassment, and retaliation.
  • Oversees and supports the program review, planning, and assessment of Distance Learning.

Requirements

  • Master's degree in library science or a related field.
  • Proven track record of progressively responsible leadership in academic libraries or similar settings.
  • Experience fostering diverse and inclusive learning environments.
  • Experience promoting equitable access to resources and opportunities for all students and faculty.
  • Proficiency in managing educational technology.
  • Experience in distance education (DE) and Open Educational Resources (OER) initiatives.
  • Strong budgeting and planning skills.

Nice-to-haves

  • Three or more years in a management position related to one or more programs.
  • Instructional experience integrating learning resources into the curriculum.
  • Experience in managing educational technology.
  • Knowledge of principles and practices in academic library programs and services administration.
