About the position

The Therapeutic Radiologic Technologist (Dosimetrist) position at the Department of Veterans Affairs involves working collaboratively within the radiation oncology team to meet the needs of cancer patients through radiation therapy. The role requires advanced knowledge and experience in treatment planning and dosimetry procedures, as well as proficiency in relevant computer programs and methodologies for data transfer and reconstruction. This position is essential for performing complex treatment plans and participating in brachytherapy procedures, ensuring high-quality patient care in a supportive and inclusive environment.

Responsibilities

  • Perform complex tasks as part of a medical team.
  • Serve as an integral team member for brachytherapy procedures, utilizing imaging technology to determine volumetric data and positioning of templates for insertion of radioactive sources.
  • Create technical policies and procedures relevant to dosimetry.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of radiation oncology simulation and treatment equipment, including CT simulators and linear accelerators.
  • Perform procedures commonly used in external beam therapy, generating radiation dose distributions and dose calculations.
  • Utilize professional judgment and critical thinking in treatment planning and resolving equipment problems.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • Certification in medical dosimetry by the Medical Dosimetrist Certification Board (MDCB) or eligibility for certification within two years.
  • Completion of a medical dosimetry program of at least 12 months accredited by the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology (JRCERT) and a baccalaureate degree.
  • At least 1 year of creditable experience equivalent to the GS-11 level in medical dosimetry.

Nice-to-haves

  • Familiarity with High Dose Rate (HDR) and Low Dose Rate (LDR) procedures.
  • Experience in training staff and providing guidance in treatment planning processes.
  • Ability to resolve complex physical and geometric errors in radiation equipment.
