About the position

The Temporary Paraeducator position at the Maryland School for the Blind involves assisting the classroom teacher in implementing individualized educational programs (IEPs) for students with disabilities. This role is essential in supporting students' educational and personal needs, including hygiene tasks, travel skills, and the use of communication devices. The position is temporary for the 2024-2025 school year and requires a commitment to maintaining health and safety standards while providing a supportive learning environment.

Responsibilities

  • Assist the teacher with the development and implementation of classroom instruction including curricular programs and data collection.
  • Assist in developing, implementing, and monitoring IEPs.
  • Support students in personal hygiene tasks and toileting.
  • Supervise student activities, including getting into the pool when necessary.
  • Assist students with travel skills and concept development.
  • Program and use augmentative communication devices.
  • Use and assist students with computers and iPads.
  • Provide vocational job coaching.
  • Use sign language and Braille as needed.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned, including G-tube feeding when necessary.

Requirements

  • Minimum of an Associate Degree or successful completion of the ParaPro assessment; Bachelor's Degree preferred.
  • Basic knowledge of special education classroom principles and practices.
  • Experience instructing students with severe and profound disabilities or emotional disorders.
  • Basic knowledge of child development and visual impairment materials, including large print and Braille.
  • One year of experience in a youth leadership role preferred.
  • Knowledge of handling, lifting, positioning, and feeding techniques for orthopedically disabled children.
