About The Position

Come join the City of Fresno team and work towards achieving our mission of Building a Better Fresno! Laborer is a semi-skilled working-level maintenance class in which incumbents perform a variety of services on City facilities and property. This position plays a key role in supporting the maintenance and safety of City facilities and public spaces used by Fresno residents. Under supervision, laborers perform a variety of building, equipment, grounds, or manual maintenance work and operate light equipment. May be required to operate electronic devices such as computers, cell phones, and tablets. Depending upon assignment, incumbents may be required to work with adult offenders and parolees. Incumbents may also be required to work weekends, holidays, nights, and may work independently or as a member of a work crew. Temporary employees work no more than 32 hours per week. Because this is a temporary, non-benefited position, salary will be prorated and employees do not participate in the City’s pension system or receive City-sponsored benefits. Multiple vacancies currently exist in the PARCS department. Immediate and future vacancies for the City of Fresno will be filled from this qualified pool for a period of six (6) months from the date the qualified pool is created, with the option of extending that period up to a maximum of two years at the City's discretion.

Requirements

  • One (1) year of continuous, full-time paid general labor or comparable experience.
  • Comparable experience may include work involving maintenance, construction, groundskeeping, custodial services, or other labor-intensive tasks.
  • Possession of a valid California Driver's License may be required at the time of appointment.
  • Provide proof of a valid driver's license and a current copy of their driving record (if applicable).
  • Successfully pass a department interview.
  • Successfully pass a Department of Justice fingerprint prior to employment.
  • Successfully complete a computer voice stress analyzer (CVSA) test and/or polygraph test (for Police Department consideration).
  • Successfully complete an extensive background investigation (for Police Department consideration).
  • Successfully pass a drug test prior to employment (for safety sensitive assignments).
  • Undergo pre-employment drug testing (for positions involving operation of certain transit vehicles, revenue service vehicles, transportation of hazardous materials or heavy equipment over 26,001 pounds requiring a commercial driver's license).
