About The Position

Under the direction of the administrator and the established policies and procedures, evaluates children referred as potentially eligible for special education services and programs.

Requirements

  • Approval obtained as a teacher consultant with a valid teaching certificate or related special education field and special education endorsement.
  • Master’s Degree in education or a field of study related to special education, and at least 5 years of successful teaching or work in a related field.
  • Knowledge and experience in consulting with regular and special education teachers.
  • Demonstrated effective organizational skills.
  • Knowledge and skills commonly used in consultation include the understanding and ability to help determine the special education eligibilities.
  • Ability to communicate effectively in both oral and written form to multiple audiences.
  • Knowledge of the requirements of state and federal mandates that directly relate to the evaluation and identification of a student with a disability.
  • Strong analytical skills are required to correctly analyze, interpret, and report quantitative and qualitative data.
  • Demonstrated understanding of the logic and application of an MTSS/RtI model and the continuum of behavior and academic supports at all levels (universal/targeted/intensive).
  • Expertise in assessment, including curriculum-based assessment, measurement, and diagnostic practices.
  • Ability to collect, analyze, and use data and research within a strategic planning and continuous improvement process and/or intervention planning.

Responsibilities

  • Serves as a member of the multidisciplinary evaluation team and assists in the comprehensive assessment of students suspected of having a disability as outlined in the Michigan Administrative Rules for Special Education.
  • Understands assessment methods, including but not limited to progress monitoring, curriculum-based measurement, and formative assessment. This may include participation in problem-solving teams and requires knowledge of data collection and tiered systems of interventions.
  • Supports staff in identifying and using research-based instructional practices.
  • Writes, or assists in writing, the Multidisciplinary Evaluation Team reports.
  • Represents the Multidisciplinary Evaluation Team at the Individualized Educational Planning Committee and makes recommendations concerning eligibility for special education programs and services.
  • Coordinate assessment activities for the multidisciplinary evaluation team.
  • Consults with staff and parents regarding behavioral and academic intervention plans.
  • Serves as a member of the Individual Educational Planning Team to assist in the determination of eligibility, placement, and development of the Individualized Educational Plan.
  • Perform individual evaluation of children, which may include achievement tests and observation.
  • Upon request, provides professional learning and consultative services to local educational staff.
  • Assumes such other duties as may be assigned.
