About the position

The Charter School of Educational Excellence Education Assistant understands and promotes the school's mission, vision, objectives, and policies both within and outside the immediate school community.

Responsibilities

  • Assist in instructing and supervising children in classroom activities.
  • Continuously monitor children to ensure safety at all times, and report child abuse and neglect when necessary.
  • Participate in learning teams within the school community that maximize cohesion, collaboration and alignment with school initiatives.
  • Help to maintain a clean and organized learning environment.
  • Maintain a quality room arrangement in compliance with curriculum standards.
  • Assist the classroom teacher in incorporating required activities into lesson plans that support children's development.
  • Design and complete documentation panels for the classrooms and hallways.
  • Maintain up to date and accurate education folders to include complete incident reports and permission slips.
  • Maintain accurate and up to date portfolios.
  • Organize and supervise approved field trips to enhance classroom learning.
  • Provide opportunities and supervise activities in order for students to demonstrate individually and in ensembles or large groups the skills and talents developed in the music program.
  • Maintain open communication with parents by scheduling parent/teacher conferences.
  • As a parent advocate, along with assistance from the School Counselor resolve issues or concerns that are raised.
  • Inform parents about daily classroom routine and expectations.
  • Responsible for the safety and welfare of all students during admission, dismissal, lunch and physical education.
  • Interact with students, parents and colleagues in a professional, positive and inspiring manner.
  • Maintain classroom supply lists and inventory.
  • Other tasks as assigned by Administration.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree required.
  • New York Teaching Assistant Certification required.
  • Must be on-track to becoming a classroom teacher.
  • 1-2 years student teaching experience in an urban school setting.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills required to develop rubrics, examine data and metrics that will enhance student knowledge and promote performance of superior work products.
  • Knowledge of childhood development and demonstrated experience with executing and planned lessons to meet the differential needs of each child.
  • Strong written, grammatical, presentation, and verbal communication skills.
  • Experience working with at-risk student population in some capacity preferred.
  • Educational experience after college (fellowships, summer study, or graduate course work to pursue greater depth in a subject area, specific instructional methodology, curriculum development, special education, technology, etc.) preferred.
  • Working knowledge and comfort level with instructional technology.
  • Demonstrated ability in utilizing office equipment and software such as Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Explorer, Excel, and Outlook).
  • Evidence of verbal and written communication skills as well as self-motivation and initiative.
  • Proven ability to work collaboratively and flexibly with a diverse team of teachers and administrators.
  • Willingness to learn new skills and participate in professional development activities.
