About the position

The Teacher Assistant Bilingual position at Chicago Public Schools involves assisting in the instruction of students in English and at least one other language. The role supports teachers in various classroom activities and ensures a conducive learning environment for students. The assistant will engage with students during lunch and playground activities, provide tutoring, and help maintain classroom order.

Responsibilities

  • Assist in the instruction of pupils in English and at least one other language.
  • Supervise students during lunchroom and playground activities.
  • Monitor corridors and review student identification cards for security purposes.
  • Help students understand and complete classroom assignments.
  • Assist teachers in preparing bulletin boards and displaying student work.
  • Operate photocopying and duplicating machines to reproduce educational materials.
  • Maintain the orderly arrangement of classrooms.
  • Greet and direct visitors to appropriate areas of the school.
  • Consult with teachers regarding concerns of individual students.
  • Operate audio-visual equipment such as video cassette recorders and projectors.
  • Provide tutoring services to students under the supervision of the classroom teacher.
  • Assist in collecting and grading students' homework assignments and examination materials.
  • Supervise the loading and unloading of students on school buses.
  • Assist in the receipt, processing, and issuance of new books under the supervision of the classroom teacher.
  • Collect daily classroom absentee reports and contact parents to verify causes of student absences.

Requirements

  • Completion of an Associate's degree from a college or university accredited by the North Central Association.
  • Good knowledge of proper grammar and spelling in English and at least one other language.
  • Basic knowledge of mathematics.
  • Knowledge of Chicago Public Schools rules and regulations.
  • Ability to speak, write, and read in English and at least one other language.
  • Ability to work with and for school-aged children.
  • Ability to follow written and oral instructions.
  • Ability to operate basic office equipment.
  • Good oral and written communication skills in English and at least one other language.
  • Good reading skills.
  • Skill in operating audio-visual equipment and personal computers is highly desirable.
