About the position

The Exceptional Student Education Specialist provides on-site procedural and curricular assistance to school-based personnel regarding the education of students with disabilities. This role focuses on ensuring compliance with educational policies and supporting the implementation of Individual Education Plans (IEPs) for students with disabilities.

Responsibilities

  • Serve as the principal's designee for all exceptional student education (ESE) staff in accordance with the annual Local Education Agency (LEA) Memo.
  • Coordinate required ESE meetings.
  • Provide information to school-based personnel on policy changes and assist regular education teachers in implementing IEPs.
  • Assist staffing committee members in developing appropriate IEPs and ensure parents receive draft IEPs for annual reviews.
  • Meet with ESE curriculum supervisors monthly regarding curricula and program delivery systems for students with disabilities.
  • Explain Procedural Safeguards to parents and inform them of available resources within the District.
  • Utilize facilitative behaviors to conduct efficient IEP meetings where all participants feel valued and heard.
  • Identify, report, and correct IDEA compliance concerns internally and externally.
  • Communicate effectively with parents, colleagues, and stakeholders to ensure fidelity in IEP implementation.
  • Utilize the electronic management system to generate IEP documents.
  • Participate in training programs to enhance skills related to job responsibilities.
  • Review current developments and literature related to job responsibilities.
  • Ensure adherence to safety rules and procedures.
  • Follow federal, state, and School Board policies.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the immediate supervisor or designee.

Requirements

  • An earned bachelor's degree or higher from an accredited institution.
  • Florida certification in at least one area of exceptionality.
  • A minimum of three (3) years of successful teaching experience in Exceptional Student Education.
  • Computer skills are required for the position.

  • Bilingual skills are preferred.
