About the position
The Teacher 1 (Career-Tech - Horticulture) position at the Madison Correctional Institution involves providing horticulture education to inmates, focusing on practical skills such as growing plants and maintaining gardens. The role requires developing lesson plans, assessing educational needs, and providing individual assistance to students. The teacher will also maintain discipline, counsel students, and manage classroom resources, all while contributing to the mission of reducing recidivism through education.
Responsibilities
- Provide instruction in horticulture and nursery work, including growing plants from seed and cuttings.
- Assess educational needs of inmates and develop lesson plans to address those needs.
- Administer, score, and interpret examinations and proficiency indicators.
- Maintain discipline and security within the classroom environment.
- Counsel students regarding their performance and personal issues.
- Prepare required records and reports, including enrollment and student progress.
- Inventory and order supplies and materials needed for instruction.
- Attend in-service training sessions and workshops for professional development.
Requirements
- Must meet eligibility requirements for Teacher Certificate/License appropriate for career-tech - horticulture & grade level as assigned.
- Must have a baccalaureate degree or less per OEA agreement.
- Applicant must successfully obtain Teacher Certificate or License prior to employment.
Nice-to-haves
- Current license in Environmental Management or equivalent.
