About the position

The High School Counselor is responsible for developing, implementing, and managing a comprehensive school counseling program to serve the academic, social, and career development needs of students enrolled in PCAHS. The incumbent will use data to inform the development of the school counseling program and evaluate its impact on the school's instructional goals. They will support the transition of student records and data between school years, ensuring proper and accurate student schedules, and will collaborate with school administrators to manage the counseling program effectively. The counselor will spend 80% of their time providing direct services to students through preventive and responsive services, including individual student planning, while the remaining time will be dedicated to development, management, system support, and accountability.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and inform the school counseling program using data and evaluate its impact on instructional goals.
  • Support the transition of student records and data between school years related to the secondary school counseling program.
  • Collaborate with school administrators on the development and management of the counseling program.
  • Communicate the goals of the counseling program to stakeholders including students, families, and community partners.
  • Provide direct services to students through preventive and responsive services, including individual student planning.
  • Design, implement, and assess the guidance curriculum.
  • Utilize responsive counseling for individual and group sessions addressing academic, social, and personal concerns.
  • Consult with families and educators to assess student needs and recommend educational options.
  • Plan and coordinate classroom guidance sessions to assist students in developing decision-making skills and identifying life goals.
  • Assess student needs and make referrals to appropriate school resource personnel and community agencies.
  • Guide and support other school staff in implementing school-wide advisory programs.
  • Establish relationships and collaborate with educators, students, families, and community partners.
  • Assist families in obtaining services for their children through referrals and follow-up processes.
  • Provide in-service training on topics related to the school counseling program and student achievement.
  • Prepare and submit reports and data to fulfill established program requirements.
  • Use data to identify students in need and deliver services accordingly.
  • Interpret tests and student data to develop and implement academic plans for individual students.

Requirements

  • A proactive, hands-on strategic thinker who will partner with the School Principal to develop effective relationships within the school.
  • Minimum Bachelor's degree (Masters preferred) in counseling and at least 1 year of effective counseling experience.
  • Demonstrated keen analytic, organization, and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to present to and influence all levels and act as a change agent.
  • Experience in developing and implementing initiatives and programs with minimal supervision.
  • Self-starter with the ability to frame issues/opportunities for school leaders and senior management.
  • Team player with strong interpersonal and communication skills; experience in effectively communicating key data, including presentations to senior management and board.
  • Experience and/or knowledge of family resources in the Memphis community is strongly preferred.
