About the position

The position is focused on managing comprehensive sustainability advisory projects specifically tailored for professional sports venues. The ideal candidate will be environmentally motivated and customer service driven, responsible for conducting assessments, generating reports that indicate the overall sustainability baseline, and creating operations and management plans. This role will also guide customers in implementing strategic planning initiatives. The clientele includes both professional and collegiate sports venues, and the projects will encompass a variety of tasks such as organizational evaluations, program implementation, stakeholder engagement, training, emissions accounting, reduction strategies, supply chain analyses, material management programs, and energy and water efficient resource utilization, as well as social sustainability programs. The candidate will be expected to maintain pre-established standards for safety and environmental issues throughout these projects. In this role, the candidate will consult with customers to identify their sustainability goals and develop tailored implementation strategies. This includes engaging with customers to understand their strategic direction for sustainability, advising on targets, and potential improvement levers. The candidate will perform full organization sustainability assessments, analyze results, and guide the implementation of environmental sustainability initiatives and cost-saving opportunities. They will prepare comprehensive final reports that include environmental, social, and economic analyses, and present these findings to customers in a timely manner. Additionally, the candidate will assess procurement and waste management activities, draft materials management plans focused on waste reduction, and facilitate materiality assessments for sports venue customers to guide strategic planning. The role also requires integrating environmental justice priorities into program development, researching greenhouse gas emissions reduction strategies, and designing project schedules while managing multiple projects simultaneously. The candidate will ensure compliance with customer and government regulations, promote a culture of safety, and maintain close communication with key personnel. Self-education on current sustainability topics and trends is also essential, as is the ability to work on Central or Eastern Time to support departmental needs. Other duties may be assigned as necessary.

Responsibilities

  • Consult with customers to identify goals and solutions and develop implementation strategies.
  • Engage with customers on their strategic direction for sustainability, advising on targets and potential improvement levers.
  • Perform full organization sustainability assessments and analyze results to guide implementation of initiatives.
  • Prepare final reports including environmental, social, and economic analysis and present conclusions to customers.
  • Assess procurement and waste management activities and draft comprehensive materials management plans.
  • Facilitate materiality assessments for sports venue customers and use results to guide strategic planning.
  • Integrate environmental justice priorities into program development.
  • Research and advise on greenhouse gas emissions reduction strategies.
  • Design project schedules, maintain multiple projects, and meet deadlines while delivering quality deliverables.
  • Analyze data sets and assessment findings to identify improvement opportunities.
  • Ensure compliance with customer and government regulations during assessments and program implementations.
  • Promote a culture of safety by ensuring site personnel are properly trained and compliant with regulations.
  • Maintain communications and a close working relationship with key WM Market Area personnel.
  • Self-educate on current sustainability topics, issues, and trends.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree in Environmental Sciences, Engineering, Sustainability, Architectural Design, Community Planning, Business or related field, or High School Diploma/GED with four years of relevant experience.
  • 3 years of relevant work experience in project/business management and Environmental or services industry experience.

Nice-to-haves

  • Knowledge of sustainability trends
  • Experience with sustainability risk and management frameworks, sport-specific or otherwise strongly preferred.
  • Experience managing golf sustainability projects with on-course tournament logistics support strongly preferred.
  • Experience conducting greenhouse gas emissions inventory and executing mitigation initiatives preferred.
  • Experience with environmental justice and intersectional environmentalism preferred.
  • Experience managing material minimization and diversion programs, supply chain analyses, and sustainable material management planning preferred.
  • Experience working in sports venues and event operations strongly preferred.
  • Experience managing multiple customers and/or projects simultaneously preferred.
  • Experience with the development of diversity, equity, and inclusion programs preferred.
  • Experience with implementing GHG emissions reduction initiatives and researching mitigation technology preferred.
