About the position
The position involves performing nursing procedures of a sub-professional nature as part of a surgical team, focusing on patient care in the operating room and related areas. The role includes assisting in pre-operative and post-operative care, ensuring patient safety, and maintaining a sterile environment during surgical procedures.
Responsibilities
- Establish and maintain positive relationships with patients, visitors, and other employees.
- Contribute to and participate in Performance/Quality Improvement activities of the assigned department.
- Provide nursing care to patients entering operating room suites, ensuring comfort and safety.
- Verify patient's identity and check chart contents for pertinent information before surgery.
- Prepare for intravenous infusions, transfusions, and assist in the administration of anesthesia.
- Prepare the operating room for surgery, including equipment inspection and supply replenishment.
- Transport patients to and from the operating or procedure table and assist in positioning.
- Assist scrub nurse, physicians, and anesthetists during surgical procedures, maintaining sterile techniques.
- Assist the surgeon throughout operative procedures, including instrument handling and maintenance of accurate counts.
- Collect patient charts, X-rays, and equipment for transfer to assigned units.
- Care for specimens and maintain asepsis in the operating room.
- Enter data and update various databases on the O.R. computer system.
Requirements
- One (1) year of satisfactory experience in a hospital, health care, or medical facility.
- One (1) year of satisfactory experience in providing non-professional nursing or medical support services.
- Completion of a prescribed course in an approved training program as a surgical or operating room technician.
- Ability to establish successful interpersonal relationships with patients and co-workers.
- Knowledge of practices and techniques in sub-professional nursing work in an operating room.
- Good manual dexterity.
- Completion of an operating room/surgical technologist course and comprehensive orientation.
- Certification by the Association of Surgical Technologists Inc.
- High School Graduate or equivalent.
- Graduation from a Surgical Technology Committee on Allied Health Education.
Nice-to-haves
- Experience with laser surgery equipment.
- Familiarity with nitrogen and electricity powered surgical hand tools.
- Knowledge of operating microscopes and video equipment.
- Experience with electrosurgical units for operating homeostasis.
- Familiarity with multiple instrument types used in various surgical sections.
- Experience with micro and specialty instruments.
- Knowledge of surgical operating systems for cases such as Total Joint Arthroplasty or Spinal Rod-ding.
