About the position

Pharmaron is seeking a highly skilled Surgical Specialist to join our innovative Medical Device team in Carlsbad, CA. This hands-on role focuses on performing advanced surgical procedures and providing technical expertise for evaluating cutting-edge medical devices and therapeutics in both large and small animal models. You will also contribute to developing new surgical techniques, mentoring junior staff, and ensuring compliance with regulatory standards.

Responsibilities

  • Lead complex surgical procedures on large and small animal models to support preclinical medical device research.
  • Innovate and refine surgical methods to advance the department's technical capabilities and expand service offerings.
  • Deliver technical guidance and hands-on training in surgical, anesthetic, and imaging techniques.
  • Act as a subject matter expert in the use of fluoroscopy, ultrasound, and endoscopy for imaging and procedure guidance.
  • Collaborate with the Attending Veterinarian to perform veterinary duties as needed.
  • Participate in protocol development, IACUC reviews, and surgical procedure refinement.
  • Ensure compliance with USDA, FDA, AAALAC, and other regulatory standards governing animal research and welfare.
  • Perform necropsies and provide guidance on best practices for animal care and surgical standards.
  • Continuously expand surgical capabilities and service offerings to meet evolving client needs.
  • Utilize and analyze data with imaging software to support preclinical research outcomes.
  • Manage surgical schedules, resources, and supply inventories.
  • Support multidisciplinary teams by collaborating with study directors, research associates, and veterinarians.
  • Stay current with evolving surgical techniques and imaging technologies to meet research needs.

Requirements

  • A minimum of 5-7 years of surgical experience in a Contract Research Organization (CRO), industry, or academic setting with expertise in medical device research.
  • Proficiency in advanced in vivo surgical techniques on large and small animals.
  • In-depth knowledge of GLP study requirements and associated documentation.
  • Certification as a Surgical Research Specialist (SRS) is highly desirable.
  • Experience with fluoroscopy, ultrasound, and endoscopy for surgical and imaging guidance.
  • Strong technical, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
  • Excellent communication and leadership abilities for training and mentoring team members.
