About the position

The Supervisory Nurse (Occupational Health) position at MCAS Miramar involves providing care to patients, promoting better occupational health practices, and consulting and advising nurses and other healthcare professionals on occupational health-related issues. The role serves a population that encompasses a variety of complex industrial processes and hazardous exposures, requiring a comprehensive occupational health program. Responsibilities include implementing the departmental Continuous Improvement program, developing and evaluating occupational health program effectiveness, and advising leadership on personnel matters. The incumbent will also prepare and submit required reports and maintain clinic supply and equipment inventory. The position requires approximately 10% travel for on-site evaluations of work environments, which may involve exposure to chemical, physical, and biological hazards. Additionally, the role includes providing nursing care for occupational and non-occupational injuries and illnesses, interpreting results of occupational physical examinations, and providing education and training on specific hazards and medical surveillance protocols. As a full line supervisor for the Occupational Medicine Department, the incumbent will oversee clinical and administrative management, including personnel supervision, performance evaluations, and training needs assessment.

Responsibilities

  • Implement the departmental Continuous Improvement program.
  • Develop, implement, and evaluate occupational health program effectiveness.
  • Advise leadership on personnel matters and resolve administrative problems.
  • Prepare and submit required narrative and statistical reports.
  • Maintain clinic supply and equipment inventory.
  • Travel approximately 10% of the time for on-site evaluations.
  • Provide nursing care for occupational and non-occupational injuries and illnesses.
  • Interpret results of occupational physical examinations and associated tests.
  • Provide education and training on specific hazards and medical surveillance protocols.
  • Serve as the full line supervisor for the Occupational Medicine Department.
  • Oversee clinical and administrative management of the occupational health assignment.
  • Develop and review position descriptions and performance standards.
  • Prepare and review employee evaluations and performance appraisals.
  • Interview and select candidates for department positions.
  • Recommend awards and set schedules.
  • Resolve employee complaints and initiate disciplinary actions.
  • Identify training needs and ensure personnel are adequately trained.

Requirements

  • US Citizenship required.
  • A graduate or higher level degree, bachelor's degree, associate degree, or diploma from an accredited professional nursing educational program.
  • Current, active, full, and unrestricted license or registration as a professional nurse.
  • One or more full years of professional nursing experience providing occupational health services.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) Certification from the American Heart Association or American Red Cross.
