About the position

The Supervisory Medical Support Assistant position at the Department of Veterans Affairs involves overseeing and managing support services within the Health Administrative Service line. This role is critical in ensuring that patient services are met effectively and efficiently, requiring a blend of administrative and supervisory skills to lead a team of Medical Support Assistants. The position is based in either Richland, WA or Yakima, WA, and is a permanent, full-time role with no telework options available.

Responsibilities

  • Plans, organizes, administers, and directs support services for the organizations served.
  • Assigns work to subordinate staff and develops performance standards.
  • Resolves complex issues to ensure patient services are met.
  • Provides technical and management guidance to optimize the use of support service resources.
  • Carries out a full range of administrative and supervisory duties, including work assignment and performance evaluations.
  • Organizes work, sets priorities, and delegates tasks to meet deadlines.
  • Manages staffing requirements and coordinates work to complete duties accurately and timely.
  • Provides briefings, orientations, staff development, and training.
  • Develops and formalizes performance evaluations for direct reports.
  • Advises management on service requirements and implications, ensuring compliance with hospital policies and regulations.

Requirements

  • U.S. Citizenship is required.
  • Proficiency in written and spoken English.
  • One year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-7 grade level leading or supervising Medical Support Assistants or equivalent administrative patient support staff.
  • Ability to provide a full range of administrative and supervisory duties to subordinate staff in a patient support setting.
  • Strong collaboration, communication, and customer service skills with internal and external customers.
  • Experience in providing briefings, orientations, and staff development in a patient support setting.
  • Ability to manage fiscal matters and forecast resource needs.

Nice-to-haves

  • Advanced knowledge of medical terminology and its application in a clinical setting.
  • Experience in managing or leading patient support staff in a clinic environment.
