About the position

The Supervisory Accountant at the Department of Veterans Affairs is responsible for ensuring effective financial management to support the Medical Facility's mission of providing care to Veterans. This role involves overseeing accounting, auditing, payment, and cashier activities, as well as managing staff and ensuring compliance with agency policies.

Responsibilities

  • Provide day-to-day oversight of all accounting, auditing, payment, and agent cashier activities.
  • Perform administrative and personnel management functions related to supervised staff.
  • Oversee daily operations of the unit and ensure adherence to agency policies and priorities.
  • Communicate expectations for staff through the formal employee performance management system.
  • Address and resolve employee complaints and work with the Chief of Finance on grievances.
  • Promote Equal Employment Opportunity (EEO) goals and adhere to nondiscriminatory practices.
  • Supervise audits and quality reviews.
  • Maintain a computerized double-entry method of recording transactions on an accrual basis.
  • Manage the Financial Management System (FMS) for classifying, recording, and analyzing financial information.
  • Provide instruction and technical expertise on fund control point management and employee travel training.

Requirements

  • U.S. citizenship is required.
  • Degree in Accounting or related field with 24 semester hours in accounting, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • At least 4 years of experience in accounting or a related field.
  • Specialized experience equivalent to GS-12 level in federal service, including knowledge of accounting policies and procedures, auditing, and financial management systems.

Nice-to-haves

  • Certification as a Certified Public Accountant (CPA) or Certified Internal Auditor (CIA).
  • Experience with the Department of Veterans Affairs accounting system.
