About the position

The Summer Waterpark Lifeguard at Nwest YMCA is a vital role responsible for ensuring the safety and well-being of all participants in the aquatic environment. This position requires a commitment to maintaining all lifeguard skills as mandated by certification standards. Lifeguards must actively scan the pool area, maintaining appropriate positioning at all times to effectively monitor swimmers and prevent accidents. In the event of a medical emergency, the lifeguard is expected to respond immediately and appropriately, demonstrating a high level of preparedness and knowledge of emergency procedures. In addition to emergency response, the lifeguard is responsible for the effective supervision of participants, ensuring compliance with safety standards and YMCA policies. This includes positively correcting any unsafe behaviors and enforcing all rules and regulations. Lifeguards must also be diligent in reporting incidents or accidents using the appropriate forms and ensuring that all documentation is submitted to a supervisor within 24 hours. Maintaining a clean and safe pool environment is crucial, which involves performing cleaning duties as assigned and ensuring that all equipment is properly stored after use. The role also requires attendance at all mandatory training sessions and meetings, as well as maintaining a professional appearance and demeanor. Lifeguards must be able to work both indoors and outdoors, adapting to various weather conditions while remaining alert and focused on the safety of all participants. This position not only emphasizes individual responsibility but also encourages building positive relationships with members, participants, and staff, contributing to a strong community atmosphere.

Responsibilities

  • Maintain all lifeguard skills as required in lifeguard certification.
  • Actively scan and maintain appropriate positioning in the pool area at all times.
  • Immediately and properly respond to medical emergencies when they arise.
  • Effectively supervise participants to maintain safety standards.
  • Follow and enforce all YMCA policies, rules, regulations, and procedures, including emergency and safety procedures.
  • Correct any unsafe pool activity immediately every time it occurs.
  • Be knowledgeable and prepared to implement emergency procedures immediately.
  • Report all incidents/accidents on the appropriate form and provide to supervisor within 24 hours of the event.
  • Never leave the pool unattended.
  • Follow all opening, closing, and shift procedures, including locking all doors leading to the pool area after swimming hours.
  • Ensure all equipment is off the pool deck and appropriately stored.
  • Report any facility or equipment irregularities to supervisor in writing.
  • Maintain cleanliness of the deck and perform cleaning duties as assigned.
  • Maintain records as required (i.e., chemical readings, daily attendance logs).
  • Attend all required training sessions and scheduled meetings.
  • Secure substitutes when necessary and notify supervisor in advance, in writing.
  • Maintain effective, positive relationships with members, participants, and staff.
  • Support Strong Community Campaign fundraising.
  • Perform all other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • Minimum age of 16.
  • Must be able to frequently perform physical activities such as swimming, bending, stooping, kneeling, twisting, reaching with hands, sitting, standing for extended periods, walking, lifting and carrying up to 50 pounds, and communicating verbally.
  • Must be able to work both indoors and outdoors and be exposed to prevalent weather conditions.
  • Must maintain lifeguard certification level of physical and mental readiness.
  • Must be able to visually see all sections of an assigned zone or area of responsibility.
  • Must be able to adequately hear noises and distinguish distress signals.
  • Must possess the ability to remain alert and maintain concentration for long periods to ensure the safety of participants.
  • Must possess the ability to make independent and sound decisions in a rapidly changing environment.
  • Must be able to show initiative in the absence of supervision.
  • Must be able to relate to and work with diverse groups of people in a friendly and consistent manner.
  • Must be able to handle questions/concerns and resolve conflicts in a courteous and professional manner.
  • Must maintain a neat and professional appearance.
