About The Position

The Penn State College of Medicine, Department of Pediatrics is seeking a highly motivated Summer Intern to join the Amatya Lab. This position will assist with research experiments, including data collection and analysis. Experiments include cell culture (cell treatment, harvesting, transfection), as well as molecular biology techniques (DNA and RNA extraction, quantitative real-time PCR, Western blot analysis, ELISAs, immunohistochemistry). The position will require processing of human saliva, tracheal aspirate, blood, and urine samples under approved protocols.

Requirements

  • Must be a current undergraduate student pursuing a degree in a relevant field (e.g., Biology, Biochemistry, Molecular Biology, or a related discipline).
  • Strong interest in science and a willingness to learn and apply basic lab techniques.
  • Passion for research.
  • Ability to collaborate effectively with lab members.
  • Strong work ethic.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Willingness to commit to a full-time schedule during a six to eight week course in the summer of 2026.
  • Willingness to adhere to laboratory safety protocols and guidelines.
  • Ability to take the initiative, ask questions, and actively engage in research activities.
  • Must have the legal right to work in the location of the research lab (e.g., citizenship, permanent residency, or appropriate work visa).

Nice To Haves

  • Completion of at least one year of coursework in biology or a related science field.
  • A competitive academic record with a minimum GPA of 3.0.

Responsibilities

  • Assist with research experiments, including data collection and analysis.

  • Conduct molecular biology techniques including DNA and RNA extraction, quantitative real-time PCR, Western blot analysis, ELISAs, and immunohistochemistry.

  • Document procedures and present findings in lab meetings.
