About The Position

Gateway Middle School is seeking a Student Support Counselor for a full-time, salaried position during the 2026-27 school year. This role is crucial for supporting middle school students' academic, social-emotional, and behavioral growth. The counselor will be instrumental in developing and implementing social-emotional learning programs, providing case management and behavioral health interventions, and coordinating initiatives to foster a positive school culture and prepare students for high school and beyond. This is a one-year position intended to build team capacity and provide consistent student support during a maternity leave.

Responsibilities

  • Collaboratively develop Crew curriculum to proactively support student community building and social-emotional learning in Advisory classes.
  • Lead skill-building groups that teach social-emotional skills, such as emotional regulation, communication/collaboration skills, mindfulness, and de-escalation.
  • Collaborate with School Counselor to provide individual counseling interventions and/or crisis interventions (e.g. related to anxiety, grief, emotional regulation, substance use).
  • Provide individual case management support for students with 504 plans in collaboration with the Director of Learning Support.
  • Develop and implement individual academic, attendance or behavioral interventions in collaboration with teachers and families (e.g. individual positive behavior plans).
  • Maintain accurate intervention tracking and analyze patterns to inform proactive support.
  • Partner with families to address attendance, academic, behavioral, and social-emotional concerns and maintain clear communication regarding interventions and follow-up.
  • Support student-family linkages with outside programs and resources.
  • Collaborate with the Director of Culture to implement schoolwide PBIS systems and implement opportunities for student voice and agency.
  • Coordinate grade level Griffing Gatherings, recognition programs, and other culture-building events to foster student belonging and culture.
  • Promote College and Career exploration by coordinating grade level college visits and an annual Career Fair.
  • Collaborate with School Counselor to support students with middle-to-high school transition planning.
  • Support students in setting and monitoring academic and behavioral goals.
  • Facilitate restorative conferences, mediation, and circles.
  • Maintain accurate student records, track progress, and prepare reports as needed.
  • Assist in developing policies and programs that promote a positive school culture and equitable opportunities for all students.
  • Supervise students during key times (arrival, lunch, transitions, dismissal) to ensure campus safety and visibility.
