About the position

The Student Life Advisor at the University of Minnesota plays a crucial role in supporting multicultural student engagement and advising student cultural centers. This position focuses on fostering a diverse and inclusive university community through program development, student mentoring, and collaboration with various university departments. The advisor will work closely with student leaders to enhance their leadership skills and ensure the effective management of cultural center activities and resources.

Responsibilities

  • Serve as primary advisor to student cultural centers, working closely with student leaders on programs and initiatives.
  • Provide vision, oversight, and support for various student groups and organizations, advising student leaders on aims, policies, and plans.
  • Develop programs to create a diverse and inclusive University community and opportunities for student leadership development.
  • Monitor programmatic budgets for the cultural centers.
  • Identify, develop, and present services and activities that advocate for student development.
  • Create a healthy environment for student mentoring and advising.
  • Co-advise the Cultural Centers Advisory Group.
  • Assist in managing the physical spaces of the cultural centers, ensuring compliance with leases and advising on space renewal processes.
  • Develop and maintain collaborative relationships with various university departments and offices.
  • Assist with recruitment efforts for underrepresented students in collaboration with the Office for Admissions and Career Services.
  • Co-lead Social Justice Leadership Initiatives and assist with program development and assessment.
  • Develop and implement measurement tools to assess student satisfaction and program success.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree plus a minimum of 4 years of experience working in higher education, including experience advising student groups.
  • Demonstrated commitment to and experience in serving the unique needs of diverse student populations.
  • Program development and evaluation experience.
  • Knowledge of identity development and student development theories.
  • Knowledge of budget planning and administration.
