About The Position

Vermont State University Castleton is seeking a qualified string player and educator to teach String Instrument Teaching Methods to undergraduate music education students. The 2-credit course is run bi-annually, beginning Fall 2026. Content includes teaching basic playing skills on all string instruments, pedagogy and resources. This position is a part-time teaching position for Fall 2026 with the possibility of renewal.

Requirements

  • Masters in string performance, music education or significant equivalent experience
  • Minimum 5 years teaching strings in an educational setting, preferably public school pK-12
  • Experience teaching students from elementary through college age
  • Proficiency on bass, cello, viola and violin and teaching pedagogy for these instruments
  • An understanding of public-school string programs in Vermont and surrounding states

Responsibilities

  • Teach MUS 2120 String Teaching Methods to undergraduate music education and music students (2-credits/100 minutes/week)
  • Create and Maintain a Canvas course for course information and assignments
  • Be available for in-person or online weekly office hours
  • Arrange for rental of instruments as necessary
