About the position

The Boston Public Schools (BPS) Department of Expanded Learning and Opportunities is seeking enthusiastic and highly effective teachers for the Acceleration Academy programming scheduled for February and April 2025. This role focuses on accelerating student learning through personalized instruction during school vacation weeks, providing educators with the opportunity to work with small groups of selected students. The goal is to enhance academic and social-emotional skills through a holistic programming model that includes targeted instruction in ELA and Math, along with enrichment activities. The February Acceleration Academy will specifically serve students needing additional support in ELA, offering approximately 26 hours of programming.

Responsibilities

  • Design and implement hands-on, project-based extension activities that supplement academic content.
  • Connect with Academic teachers to identify academic standards for each grade level during the Academy week.
  • Deliver a series of 1-hour lessons to up to 15 students per grade level throughout the day.
  • Participate in 4 hours of required pre-program professional development, including 2 hours of mandatory DESE PD offered remotely.
  • Prepare classroom and instructional materials prior to the start date of the Acceleration Academy.
  • Engage in family outreach and communication to recruit and maintain high student participation rates.
  • Take daily attendance for accurate data collection.
  • Collect evaluative student work and record performance as directed by the site coordinator.
  • Assist the Site Coordinator with program and logistical duties such as arrival, dismissal, and cafeteria duty.
  • Participate in feedback and debrief activities, including completing an end-of-program survey.

Requirements

  • Highly qualified teacher with relevant DESE certification.
  • At least three years of professional teaching experience.
  • Experience teaching Students with Disabilities and English Learners.
  • Experience with developing and implementing project-based curriculum.
  • Dedication to Expanded Learning Opportunities and commitment to making the Acceleration Academies effective.

Benefits

  • Stipend of $65 per hour worked, up to 40 hours, including 26 program hours and 14 hours of planning, prep, and PD time.
