The YMCA’s Support, Tutoring, and Adventure for Youth (Y-STAY) teachers are responsible for working within Manchester’s middle or high school to assist students who are chronically truant, failing multiple classes, or are at risk of dropping out of school. Each Y-STAY teacher works within one school with 25 students in small groups, providing them with support to experience more success in school and improve their GPAs, resist involvement in risky behaviors, get along better with people, and improve their overall social behaviors. The Y-STAY teacher focuses on implementing curriculum activities that promote character development, asset building, alcohol, tobacco and other drug prevention, and life skills development. The Y-STAY teacher is responsible for managing day-to-day relationships with school administration, other teachers, and resource staff. The position extends support to Y-STAY alumni and to other students in the school as needed. The Y-STAY Teacher additionally is responsible for keeping parents informed of students’ progress and is available for problem-solving, providing referrals for additional support, and offering suggestions on strengthening the parent-child relationship.
