About the position

The Staff Safety System Engineer at General Motors will lead the development of System Safety architecture for the company's platforms, focusing on the implementation of Mechatronics Infrastructure System Safety. This role involves collaborating with various teams to ensure safety requirements are met and developing strategies that align with industry standards. The engineer will also be responsible for creating test strategies, maintaining technical documentation, and mentoring team members, all while contributing to the overall vehicle electrical architecture.

Responsibilities

  • Champion implementation strategy of mechatronics infrastructure system safety.
  • Create architecture requirements and test cases for infrastructure system safety implementation.
  • Drive industry standardization of functional safety requirements and design.
  • Collaborate with System Safety Engineers, ECU hardware experts, software implementation teams, and hardware teams to ensure safety cases for microprocessors, ASICs, ECUs, and infrastructure related to application system safety cases are correctly allocated to hardware and software.
  • Ensure safety cases are aligned with critical vehicle safety milestones for vehicle operation.
  • Create test strategy to ensure all system safety functions can be tested to meet objectives.
  • Ensure processor integrity and system safety related requirements can be appropriately translated to implementation strategies for new HW, new ECUs, new application requirements.
  • Lead functional decomposition, interface definition and DFMEA for safety system functions.
  • Lead testing and validation initiatives to ensure proper functionality and performance.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams, including our Tier 1s, to ensure seamless integration of mechatronics system safety into the overall vehicle architecture.
  • Create and maintain technical documentation, including system specifications, decomposition diagram, test plans, and troubleshooting guides.
  • Provide advice and technical mentoring to other team members and promote a team environment that values the backgrounds, opinions, and ideas of everyone.
  • Collaborate with team to continuously improve processes, methodologies, and tools.
  • Stay up to date with the latest industry standards, protocols, and trends related to system safety.

Requirements

  • Bachelor of Science in Systems Engineering, Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Computer Science, Math, or related experience in lieu of degree.
  • Eight or more years in Systems Engineering and experience planning, designing, and implementing System Safety requirements.
  • Knowledge and experience in System Safety protocols and standards, including ISO 26262.
  • Advanced understanding of network troubleshooting tools.
  • Knowledge of software development lifecycle and testing methodologies.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Excellent communication skills with the ability to explain complex technical concepts at a basic level.
  • Excellent teamwork skills to collaborate effectively with peers, cross-functional teams, and stakeholders.
  • Experience with cross-functional leadership across product and program teams.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills and ability to effectively communicate and translate feedback, needs, and solutions.
  • Demonstrated ability to ideate, formulate and execute winning technical strategies and innovations.
  • Evidence of data-based decision making.

Nice-to-haves

  • Master of Science in Systems Engineering, Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, Math, or related experience.
  • Engineering and Embedded Software Systems, with a focus on System Safety.
  • A proven history of designing and implementing System Safety Standards.
  • Seven or more years of experience working with Electrical architectures.
  • Familiarity with continuous integration and continuous delivery (CI/CD) practices.
  • Design for Six Sigma Black Belt.
  • Knowledge of AUTOSAR software concepts and implementation.
