About The Position

The Health Promotion Research Center (HPRC) at Stephenson Cancer Center is seeking a motivated and detail-oriented Staff Research Assistant to support multiple ongoing research studies focused on health behavior change. This position is ideal for individuals interested in public health, behavioral science, psychology, or health research and offers meaningful, hands-on experience with NIH funded randomized controlled trials. This role provides an outstanding foundation for a research-focused career, with opportunities to contribute to scientific publications. HPRC's research directly addresses behaviors that significantly impact cancer risk and overall health, including tobacco use, alcohol consumption, and marijuana use. As a Staff Research Assistant, you will play a critical role in connecting participants to research, collecting high-quality data, and advancing studies that inform real-world health interventions. This is not a biomedical/bench science position.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in a relevant field (e.g., Biology, Psychology, Engineering, Computer Science, Sociology, or a related discipline aligned with the specific area of research or project focus)
  • 1 year of experience supporting research or working in a laboratory setting
  • Experience or a combination of education & related experience can be considered in lieu of degree. A one-to-one ratio is used to determine the number of years of experience required in place of a degree.

Nice To Haves

  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in Psychology, Sociology, Public Health, or other Healthcare field.
  • Ability to perform basic data analysis.
  • Knowledge and experience in research methods including clinical trial data collection procedures and IRB processes.

Responsibilities

  • Serve as the first point of contact for research participants at HPRC
  • Complete participant referrals and screen applicants for eligibility
  • Support participant enrollment and ongoing study involvement
  • Communicate clearly and compassionately with participants throughout the research process
  • Collect research data using standardized protocols
  • Maintain accurate records and confidential research files
  • Assist with data cleaning, management, and basic data analyses
  • Ensure data integrity and compliance with study procedures
  • Assist with preparation of reports and research summaries
  • Support multiple ongoing studies, including NIH funded and pilot randomized controlled trials
  • Contribute to research activities focused on health behavior change such as: Smoking cessation, Alcohol use reduction or cessation, Marijuana use reduction or cessation
  • Collaborate closely with investigators, coordinators, and research staff
  • Gain exposure to study design, implementation, and analysis
  • Opportunities to be included as a contributor or co-author on research publications
