About the position

The Staff Psychologist (BHIP) position within the U.S. Government's Veterans Health Administration involves providing psychological services to veterans, including assessment, diagnosis, and treatment of a wide range of mental health issues. The role requires applying culturally sensitive techniques and collaborating with multidisciplinary teams to enhance patient care. The psychologist will also mentor and supervise staff and students, contributing to the development of effective treatment strategies and programs.

Responsibilities

  • Apply culturally sensitive psychological assessment techniques, diagnosis, intervention, and behavioral health.
  • Provide advice and consultation to professionals from various disciplines.
  • Exercise judgment in selecting or adapting psychological theories and techniques for patient treatment.
  • Work with patients and families experiencing emotional, medical, and social problems using individual, group, and family psychotherapy skills.
  • Assess psychosocial functioning and needs of patients and their families, formulating and implementing treatment plans.
  • Administer psychosocial treatment modalities and implement treatment under clinical supervision.
  • Utilize supportive, problem-solving, or crisis intervention techniques in treatment.
  • Provide specialized treatment for complex physical and mental illnesses.
  • Incorporate complex multiple causation in differential diagnosis and treatment of veteran patients.
  • Serve as a subject matter expert in specialized interventions and treatment modalities.
  • Consult with colleagues and students on psychosocial treatment of patients.
  • Teach and mentor staff and students in the specialty area of practice.

Requirements

  • Must be a U.S. Citizen.
  • Hold a doctoral degree in psychology from an accredited program.
  • Complete a professional psychology internship accredited by APA or CPA.
  • Hold a full, current, and unrestricted license to practice psychology at the doctoral level.
  • Proficient in written and spoken English.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience in clinical research.
  • Board certification by the American Board of Professional Psychology in a relevant specialty area.
