About the position

The Staff Counsel I position at AmTrust involves managing a caseload related to workers' compensation claims from inception to court. The role requires independent representation of the Employer/Carrier in administrative hearings, legal research, and the development of defense strategies. The position emphasizes effective communication with clients and legal professionals, as well as maintaining a strong understanding of the company's mission and values.

Responsibilities

  • Independently represents the Employer/Carrier before the assigned Judge of Compensation Claims and presents witnesses and evidence at administrative hearings on litigated workers' compensation claims.
  • Analyzes complex legal and factual issues, conducts extensive legal research, and develops defense strategies on behalf of the Employer/Carrier.
  • Prepares pleadings, written discovery, motions, and briefs in support of defense strategies.
  • Provides effective and timely communications, information, legal advice, and other services to clients and claims professionals on legal and factual issues.
  • Uses independent judgment, research, litigation, and analytical skills in case management.
  • Assists in developing training materials for the WC claim department.
  • Works with the WC claim department and Law Department on special projects related to workers' compensation.
  • Communicates with the Office of the Judges of Compensation Claims, witnesses, opposing counsel, and clients in accordance with established office procedures.
  • Responsible for the prompt, efficient, and effective disposition of assigned cases.
  • Keeps current with market trends and demands, attending continuing legal education seminars to maintain professional expertise.
  • Performs other functionally related duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • NY State licensed attorney.
  • Knowledge of Workers' Compensation statutes and their application.
  • 2+ years of workers' compensation litigation experience.
