About the position

The Staff Civil Engineer position at Burns & McDonnell focuses on supporting water construction management projects in the Chicago region. This role involves field activities such as site investigations, inspections, and assessments, ensuring compliance with project plans and specifications. The engineer will work closely with project managers and clients, contributing to high-profile stormwater, wastewater, and drinking water projects while maintaining safety and quality standards.

Responsibilities

  • Perform field activities including site investigations, inspections, and assessments for various projects.
  • Provide Resident Engineering and Inspection of construction projects to ensure compliance with plans and specifications.
  • Create field reports and document daily work performed on project sites.
  • Produce accurate quantity data for contractor pay estimates and material certification.
  • Coordinate with designers for shop drawing reviews, requests for information, and change orders.
  • Maintain communication with Project Managers regarding site progress and issues.
  • Solve technical problems related to project parameters.
  • Interface with clients as needed and ensure compliance with safety policies.
  • Work productively in an office setting during downtime on project sites.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in civil engineering or related degree from an ABET accredited program and 3 years of civil engineering experience, consulting preferred.
  • Bachelor's degree in civil or related engineering technology from an ABET accredited program and successful completion of Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) exam, along with 3 years of civil engineering experience, consulting preferred.
  • Master's degree in civil engineering and 2 years of civil engineering experience, consulting preferred.
  • Strong knowledge in standard civil engineering techniques and procedures.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to work methodically and analytically in a quantitative problem-solving environment.
  • Strong computer skills including Microsoft Office Suite, AutoCAD, MicroStation, BIM (Revit), Civil 3D, PLS, PLS-CADD, RISA-3D, MathCADD.
  • Strong attention to detail, facilitation, team building, collaboration, organization, and problem-solving skills.
