About the position

The Staff Chaplain at Mayo Clinic provides emotional support, spiritual counsel, and comfort to patients, families, and staff. This role involves addressing spiritual needs, participating in interdisciplinary patient care, and promoting a healing environment. The chaplain is responsible for providing sacraments and rituals from various faith traditions, supporting educational programs, and participating in leadership activities. Flexibility in working hours is required, including on-call duties.

Responsibilities

  • Provide emotional support and spiritual counsel to patients and families.
  • Consult with staff regarding ethical, moral, or personal issues.
  • Participate in interdisciplinary patient care teams.
  • Promote a healing environment for patients and staff.
  • Provide and arrange sacraments and rituals from various faith traditions.
  • Collaborate with the Spiritual Care Department in planning spiritual care programs.
  • Serve on committees and task forces within the hospital and department.
  • Support educational programs and staff development activities.
  • Document patient care encounters in the medical record and maintain records for assigned areas.
  • Assist in orienting new personnel to the department.

Requirements

  • Masters Theological degree (e.g. Master of Divinity) from an accredited seminary.
  • Minimum of four units of Clinical Pastoral Education from an ACPE approved center.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills, including computer skills.
  • Two years of working experience in a healthcare setting preferred.
  • Endorsement for service as a Chaplain by an appropriate faith community.
  • Board Certification or certification-eligible with a national association.

Nice-to-haves

  • Electronic Medical Record (EMR) experience preferred.
  • Master's/Advanced Degree in related fields (e.g. Master's in Public Health, Master's in Philosophy/Ethics) preferred.
