About the position

Tesla is currently seeking a motivated Manufacturing Engineer with expertise in discrete event simulation modeling to design the material flow for Global Factory Design projects for Vehicle and Energy Products. This role focuses on the end-to-end design of material flow, from concept design through handoff of a fully detailed plan to Operations. This role will design the inbound loading process, provide material handling equipment needs, specify equipment to minimize manual handling, and ensure the lineside space is efficiently designed. This role requires an understanding of Manufacturing Engineering fundamentals with a solid proficiency in simulation modeling. It is critical for a successful applicant to solve problems using first principles analysis, and exercise aggressive design optimization. This position is based in Austin, TX.

Responsibilities

  • Develop End to End Material Flow Simulation Model for the entirety of the Bill of Materials for new products and new factories/expansions, while optimizing variables such as factory space, labor and throughput
  • Design and implement custom modules, objects, and FlexScript / C++ solutions for tailored simulations for complex material flow models
  • Perform Capacity Planning calculations to ensure accurate resource & equipment planning for the designed system such as material handling labor, warehouse space and material handling equipment
  • Challenge the assumptions behind manufacturing designs, and base recommendations of design on first principles approach
  • Collaborate with cross functional teams such as layout, production control, infrastructure, manufacturing design, etc., to ensure the right strategies of material flow designs are implemented and evaluate solutions for complex comparison scenarios in manufacturing environments
  • Create and maintain digital twin models to test and validate factory operations, warehouses and material flow system designs
  • Perform clash detection analysis for material flow routes in the factory footprint to ensure smooth flow of materials

Requirements

  • 2+ years of industrial, or manufacturing engineering experience with emphasis on discrete event simulations for material flow/supply chain/process improvement (internship experience will be considered)
  • Degree in Industrial Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, Computer Science and/or equivalent experience
  • 2+ years of hands-on experience in simulation modeling, particularly using FlexSim in a manufacturing or warehousing environment (academic experience will be considered)
  • Experience with developing features and modules within discrete event simulation software with FlexScript, C++ and/or Visual Basic (VB)
  • Demonstrated leadership and ability to drive projects with diverse teams in a high-volume manufacturing environment
  • Experience quantitatively solving ambiguous problems at a systems level
  • Extensive detailed analysis experience to make data-driven decisions and summarize results for executives
  • Exemplary verbal and written communication skills
  • Extensive experience with Excel (VBA a plus) and data visualization/analysis software such as Tableau, SQL
  • Experience with layouts in AutoCAD and Revit
