About The Position

The Sr. Director, Corporate Strategy & Development, will play a critical role in shaping and executing the company's long‑term growth agenda. This role partners closely with executive leadership to evaluate corporate strategy initiatives, identify and evaluate growth opportunities, and advance strategic partnerships and development initiatives that accelerate enterprise value creation. The ideal candidate combines enterprise‑level strategic thinking with hands‑on experience driving complex, cross‑functional initiatives and external engagements, supported by strong financial acumen and a proven ability to assess strategic and financial impacts and evaluate risk. This individual will drive disciplined execution through strong project management, clear accountability, and consistent delivery of outcomes across multiple workstreams.

Requirements

  • Master's level degree with a minimum of 15 years of relevant experience (e.g., strategy, business development, finance) required; or a Bachelor's degree with 20 years of experience required. Equivalent experience and education will be considered.
  • This position requires a high-level of autonomy, discretion, and judgment. Interactions will be with external and internal executive leaders.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience in mergers and acquisitions, consulting, investment banking, or corporate or competitive strategy is preferred; some operational experience is preferred but not required.
  • Given the breadth of projects spanning all UPMC divisions, it is strongly preferred that the incumbent exhibit knowledge and understanding of health care across the full continuum of services and markets.

Responsibilities

  • Partner with Executive Leadership. Work with senior executives to identify, evaluate, and develop effective strategies and initiatives for achieving UPMC's long-term goals — with particular emphasis on business development and expansion opportunities through strategic partnerships and de novo opportunities.
  • Drive Market Intelligence and Strategic Insight. Monitor and analyze critical internal and external trends using qualitative and quantitative methods to develop a deep understanding of UPMC's distinct regional markets, recognizing its unique position as both a provider and payer. Translate insights into clear, actionable implications for executive leadership, informing risk and opportunity assessment and shaping forward‑looking strategies that position UPMC for future success.
  • Drive Business Development Initiatives. Manage end‑to‑end transaction execution, in coordination with UPMC legal, for strategic partnerships and M&A activities, including structuring and negotiation of transaction terms, coordination of due diligence and other customary transaction‑related activities.
  • Ensure Cross-Functional Alignment. Collaborate with clinical, operational, legal, finance, and other key stakeholders to design and execute complex partnership and development initiatives.
  • Drive Project Execution and Governance. Establish and maintain strong project management rigor to drive planning and execution of enterprise strategic initiatives, including governance structures, milestone and dependency tracking, risk and issue management, and accountability across multiple cross-functional workstreams.
  • Prepare Executive and Board Materials. Develop high-quality analyses, recommendations, and presentation materials for executive leadership, governance committees, and the Board of Directors.
  • Develop and Lead Talent. Lead, mentor, and develop team members and project teams. Promote high standards of analytical rigor, collaboration, and accountability. Foster a culture of ownership, continuous improvement, and strategic thinking.
