About the position

The Senior Cisco Wireless Network Engineer is responsible for the design, configuration, deployment, and maintenance of the wireless network essential for device communication at UC San Diego. This role involves ensuring access to various systems, troubleshooting network issues, and maintaining documentation of network topologies. The engineer will also support other network systems and provide 24/7 problem management support, participating in an on-call rotation. The position requires advanced problem-solving skills and adherence to industry standards.

Responsibilities

  • Design, configure, deploy, and maintain the wireless network.
  • Ensure access to systems like EMR, Clinical/Medical equipment, and Business Applications.
  • Analyze logs for troubleshooting and network health assessment.
  • Maintain comprehensive documentation of network topologies.
  • Support network systems including routers, switches, firewalls, VPNs, and Cisco ISE.
  • Provide 24/7 problem management support for wireless networking and related software applications.
  • Participate in an on-call rotation for network issues.
  • Gather requirements from stakeholders and design network solutions.
  • Research technologies and methodologies for network improvements.
  • Document specifications and manage incidents with third-party service providers during outages.
  • Implement performance KPI reporting procedures and conduct regular compliance audits.
  • Manage vendor relationships and document the current environment for operational purposes.

Requirements

  • Nine (9) years of related experience, education/training, OR a Bachelor's degree in related area plus five (5) years of related experience/training.
  • Professional experience managing communication and network systems.

Nice-to-haves

  • Expert knowledge of all 802.11 standards (a,b,g,n,ac,ax) and radio frequency communication principles.
  • Expert knowledge with Site Survey tools and significant field experience with Cisco wireless solutions.
  • Expert knowledge with Cisco ISE for authentication and Guest Access.
  • Experience with Cisco Wireless management solutions such as DNA Center and Prime Infrastructure.
  • Solid understanding of Cisco wired networks, routers, switches, and firewalls.
