About The Position

We are seeking a Sr. Accountant who will be responsible for the preparation of recording, analysis, and reporting of financial data in accordance with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles and other university guidelines. The Sr. Accountant will utilize an advanced and complex understanding of the various accounting requirements for a nonprofit, higher education organization. The Sr. Accountant will be responsible for non-routine accounting transactions and serve as a project lead for accounting projects.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree in Accounting, Business, Finance or related field.
  • Three years of progressively responsible related work experience.
  • Proficiency with various software applications (e.g. spreadsheets, relational databases, statistical and graphic packages), to assemble, manipulate and/or format data and/or reports.
  • Proficiency in advanced Excel functions, Word, PowerPoint, and various other applications.

Responsibilities

  • Record, classify, and summarize complex financial transactions and events according to accepted accounting principles.
  • Analyze moderately complex financial statements and reports. Extract data to create account reconciliations, financial statements and reports for senior staff.
  • Research and resolve moderately complex accounting issues and discrepancies, ensuring compliance with University procedures and policies.
  • Ensure account administration complies with applicable federal, state and local guidelines.
  • Ensure data quality of financial records and related data.
  • Monitor, verify, and reconcile accounts.
  • Develop relationships with departmental and University personnel to analyze information and make recommendations on the resolutions of issues in compliance with established University policies and procedures.
  • Provide technical and analytical guidance to departmental and University personnel.
  • Assist in training new employees.
  • Serve as a resource to other accounting staff with respect to account reconciliations, journal entries, and preparation of financial statements and reports.
  • Direct the work of lower-level staff as assigned.
  • Collaborate with the Accounting Manager on special projects or tasks as needed.
  • Lead special projects and oversee special project work groups.
  • Respond to ad hoc, high priority reporting requests.
  • Support the University’s adherence to funds management policies governing accumulated deficit balances, use of restricted funds and the chart of accounts.
  • Collaborate with divisions across Johns Hopkins University (JHU) to perform quarterly reconciliations and address deficit balances.
  • Assist in yearly close out process, update SAP for new accounts and run the year-end process in SAP.
  • Work closely with divisions and schools to identify funding issues and proper gift spend.
  • Partner with the Financial Systems Administrative team to maintain dashboards and tools to monitor compliance with funds management policies.
  • Process journal entries and cost transfers between divisions within the University.
  • Prepare journal entries, including moderately complex transactions, to ensure GAAP compliance.
  • Provide exceptional customer service support to the user community.
  • Assist in the creation and analysis of SAP reports as needed.
  • Maintain proper documentation and support for various reporting needs.
  • Prepare ad-hoc reports to meet the needs of executives and committees.
  • Collect and provide necessary documentation for the preparation of annual audited financial statements, including footnote disclosures and analytical reviews.
