About the position

The position involves leading fitness classes at the YMCA, demonstrating a commitment to continuing education, and ensuring a safe and effective exercise environment for participants. Responsibilities include screening students for health risks, providing pre-class instructions, and demonstrating proper exercise techniques. The instructor must assess fitness levels and guide students to appropriate classes while maintaining a conscientious approach to the class environment. This includes monitoring participants' fatigue levels, ensuring safety, and encouraging progress. The role also requires setting up and maintaining equipment and cleanliness in the wellness area, as well as securing substitutes when necessary.

Responsibilities

  • Demonstrates a commitment to continuing education by taking courses to expand knowledge base and practical skill.
  • Attends all required meetings as directed by their supervisor.
  • Screens students carefully for risk factors and any health problems or medical limitations that would prevent them from participating.
  • Gives pre-class instructions, explaining goals of aerobics, how to take a pulse, and determine target heart rate range.
  • Demonstrates safe and effective exercise techniques and modifies exercises for individuals with specific needs.
  • Assesses levels of fitness and directs students to appropriate classes, from beginning to advanced levels.
  • Maintains awareness of the class environment, ensuring appropriate footwear and clothing, ventilation, and temperature.
  • Insists on safe flooring for impact aerobics and plays motivating music at an appropriate level.
  • Maintains visual contact with participants, monitoring fatigue levels and signs of overexertion.
  • Guides students skillfully through transitions with clear cues.
  • Encourages students to progress appropriately, applying principles of overload and rest.
  • Sets up equipment and stores it securely after class, maintaining cleanliness in the wellness area.
  • Responsible for securing own substitutes if unable to attend scheduled class times.
  • Performs all other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • 18 years or older
  • High School Diploma or equivalent
  • One or more years' experience as a class participant, leader, instructor, or equivalent
  • Certification through specialty format required
