About the position

The Specialist in Area of Study Advising at Austin Community College is responsible for providing academic advising and support services to students, facilitating the Guided Pathways model. This role involves guiding students through educational issues, financial aid processes, and promoting student success, particularly for those who are academically at-risk. The position may involve both in-person and virtual interactions with students.

Responsibilities

  • Guide students during advising sessions regarding educational issues such as course and program selection, class scheduling, TSI compliance, and career planning.
  • Support students with the application, award, and administration of financial aid to ensure access to federal and state aid.
  • Assess needs for assistance and refer students to appropriate services.
  • Manage caseload effectively and implement interventions to promote student success and retention.
  • Educate individuals using coaching techniques to help them overcome personal and educational challenges.
  • Coordinate referrals to college and community services, including mental health counseling.
  • Review transcripts and interpret test scores to determine college readiness and compliance with TSI.
  • Maintain expert advising knowledge of assigned Areas of Study.
  • Keep accurate and complete student records as required by laws and institutional policies.
  • Prepare students for future educational experiences by encouraging exploration of career opportunities.
  • Confer with instructors and administrators to discuss students' progress and resolve challenges.
  • Document advising recommendations and maintain communication regarding program or course issues.
  • Gather data and prepare reports on students and activities as required.
  • Participate in and promote career-related programs and events.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree.
  • Two years related work experience.
