About The Position

The Specialist-Advisor position will advise undergraduate students in the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology (BMB). This position will work collaboratively with the undergraduate team to engage in proactive and holistic advising, offered through an equity lens, to support and empower students to reach their goals and to make a difference in the MSU community and the world at large. BMB offers sophisticated instruction in modern biology, molecular genetics, and biotechnology. The undergraduate experience is characterized by strong preparation in chemistry, molecular biology, and biochemistry, emphasizing practical training in laboratory skills. Training in these areas provides excellent preparation for postgraduate education and the job market. Many students plan to further their studies at the graduate or professional level, or pursue careers in industry, pharmaceuticals, or related health science.

Requirements

  • Master’s degree in education/higher education, student affairs, counseling, biology or related STEM field, the sciences, or other relevant field.
  • Evidence of strong communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Commitment to and/or experience with advancing a culture of belonging and inclusive excellence.
  • Demonstrated ability to work with diverse populations.
  • Proficiency in standard computer programs (e.g., MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Teams; Google Docs; Google Sheets, Zoom, etc.).
  • Interest in continuous professional development.
  • Demonstrated ability and willingness to work both autonomously and as a key member of a collaborative team.
  • Strong organizational and time management skills with attention to detail and accuracy.
  • Ability to handle difficult conversations.
  • Ability to adapt to change and critically think through complex situations.

Responsibilities

  • Assist in course selection, while maintaining and monitoring student records towards degree completion.
  • Support students by providing academic success strategies; creating connections with campus resources, research, and internship opportunities; encourage growth in career development, including preparation for graduate and professional school.
  • Bridge connections between students and other members of BMB (undergraduates, faculty, staff, specialists, graduate students, postdocs, and alumni) and the broader MSU community.
  • Represent the BMB department; advising students during New Student Orientation programs; undergraduate commencement; recruitment opportunities such as Admitted Students Day; at colloquium, and other associated undergraduate events.
  • Participation in undergraduate curriculum review.
  • Engage with faculty, academic staff, the College of Natural Science Dean’s Office, the Honors College, Lyman Briggs College, and other units on campus to ensure coordinated student support.
  • Collaborate with advising colleagues through college-wide advisor meetings and professional development activities to promote professional growth and to support the student’s academic success.
  • Work collaboratively through an equity lens to ensure all students and members of the BMB Undergraduate Office feel supported and respected in their roles towards student success.
  • Communicate effectively with various audiences using email, video conferencing software, small group, and individual sessions as appropriate.
  • Continuously develop knowledge of best practices, policies and procedures, and technological tools related to academic advising.
