About the position

The Special Police Officer is responsible for performing protective, law enforcement, and security services to ensure the safety and security of patients, visitors, teammates, and property within the hospital grounds. This role involves investigating criminal acts, making arrests, and acting as the first responder to any imminent threats to life or safety.

Responsibilities

  • Intervene effectively when encountering unruly, abusive, threatening, or armed individuals.
  • Apprehend and arrest individuals for criminal activity.
  • Complete investigations of criminal activity within assigned jurisdiction and process criminal defendants according to NC criminal proceedings.
  • Respond to routine and emergency calls for assistance and complete uniform incident reports and other documentation.
  • Communicate calmly and courteously with all individuals involved in incidents or investigations.
  • Coordinate and communicate with community police agencies as necessary.
  • Provide armed response to imminent threats to life or safety on Atrium Health property.
  • Assist teammates and serve as a subject matter expert in criminal processes.
  • Prepare criminal cases for court proceedings, attend court, and testify in criminal proceedings.

Requirements

  • Basic law enforcement training is required.
  • General law enforcement certification per North Carolina Criminal Justice Education and Training Standards or ability to transfer certification from another jurisdiction is required.
  • Ability to work independently and respond calmly in complex, stressful situations.
  • Knowledge of federal, state, and local criminal statutes and case law.
  • Knowledge of the criminal process.
  • Demonstrate proficiency with a firearm to meet Atrium Health and North Carolina standards.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain NC General Law Enforcement Certification.
  • Ability to perform under stressful, emergency conditions.
  • Valid Driver's license is required.
  • Ability to pass rigorous background check, polygraph, and/or psychological testing.
  • Ability to pass Atrium Health mandated Taser, CPI, and self-defense training.

Nice-to-haves

  • Two years of general law enforcement or public safety experience preferred.
