About The Position

VicPD's Special Municipal Constable program encompasses Jail Guards and Community Safety Officers (CSO). Jail Guards are responsible for the intake, care, and supervision of persons in custody, as well as the management of their property. CSOs provide operational support to front-line officers and assist the public at community events and at VicPD’s front desk. This competition is seeking applicants for full time Special Municipal Constable positions. We are seeking to fill current Jail Guard and Community Safety Officer vacancies. Applications are invited from all Special Municipal Constable employees.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct prisoner intake, documenting health and safety concerns
  • Search prisoners, facilitate prisoner movements and document actions to criminal court standard
  • Effectively de-escalate, communicate and interact with persons in custody
  • Monitor persons in custody through both in-person checks and remote monitoring
  • Maintain jail facility and report hazards and concerns
  • Assist with virtual bail hearings as required
  • Enter information into PRIME and receive information from police systems
  • Account, accurately document, safekeep and return property to those entering and leaving custody
  • Utilize VicPD’s prescribed telehealth program as directed by the Jail NCO. Jailers are expected to maintain a working knowledge of the program and perform basic medical tasks—such as blood pressure and temperature assessments—under the direction of medical staff. When required, jailers may also be responsible for the dispensing of prescribed medications.
  • Assist Police Officers in the jail and respond to all jail incidents including medical events. Serve as First Aid attendant for VicPD employees
  • Where reasonable and necessary, manage persons in custody in accordance with VicPD policy, the Criminal Code and the National Use of Force Framework
  • Assist the public with requests and reports at the Front Desk. Collect and enter pertinent information into PRIME.
  • Facilitate Bail hearings in the Jail
  • Backfill assistance for the Court Liaison Officer
  • Serve documents in the community
  • Assist front line officers with tasks including CCTV collection with limited review when requested
  • Conduct perimeter security at police incidents
  • Collect property, transport property and lodge property
  • Provide a uniform presence at public and community events
  • Aid or provide relief in the Jail as required
