About the position
The Special Education Teaching Assistant at the Sonoma County Office of Education plays a crucial role in supporting certificated staff in the instruction and supervision of students with diverse special education needs. This part-time position involves providing direct assistance in various educational settings, ensuring that students receive the necessary support to thrive academically and socially. The assistant will work closely with students aged 3 to 22, helping them with personal care, academic tasks, and life skills, while maintaining a safe and effective learning environment.
Responsibilities
- Assist in direct instruction across various subjects including vocational skills, academics, and self-help skills.
- Maintain an effective learning environment through student supervision and class management.
- Prepare instructional materials and perform clerical tasks such as typing and filing.
- Monitor and assist students in using adaptive devices and equipment.
- Provide direction and support to peer tutors and student assistants.
- Contribute feedback on student progress and maintain accurate records.
- Accompany students to general education classes and assist as needed.
Requirements
- High school diploma or GED is required.
- Experience in teaching or working in an instructional environment is preferred.
- Valid Driver's License and CPR Certification are required.
Nice-to-haves
- Knowledge of general needs and behaviors of students with special needs.
- Experience with behavior and anger management techniques.
