About The Position

This is a 1.0 FTE Special Education Teacher position for a Resource Room. The role involves supporting regular educators by modifying curriculum for students eligible for special education, ensuring students with disabilities are full participants in the general curriculum, and implementing state and federal special education laws. The teacher will participate in IEP development and oversee their implementation, supervise paraprofessionals, develop lesson plans, and provide individualized and small group instruction. A key aspect of the role is establishing and maintaining appropriate student behavior for a supportive learning environment, evaluating and tracking student growth, and communicating progress to parents. The position also requires collaboration with other professionals to address student needs and maintaining professional competence through ongoing learning. Additional duties include supervising students during out-of-classroom activities, administering standardized tests, writing evaluation reports, and participating in curriculum development.

Requirements

  • DESE certification in moderate disabilities required at the appropriate grade level required
  • Must have excellent communication and interpersonal skills
  • Must possess a high level of capability with technology
  • Experience and commitment to working in a racially and culturally diverse teaching and learning community

Nice To Haves

  • Masters Degree in Special Education preferred
  • DESE certification in severe disabilities and previous experience will also be considered if moderate license is pursued within the first year of employment

Responsibilities

  • Supports regular educator by modifying curriculum for students eligible for special education, using the course of study adopted by the MA DESE.
  • Works to ensure the rights of students with disabilities to be full participants in the general curriculum.
  • Implements state and federal laws and regulations as they apply to special education.
  • Participates in the development of and oversees implementation of IEPs for students eligible for special education.
  • Supervises and supports paraprofessionals as they implement instruction.
  • Develops lesson plans and instructional materials and provides individualized and small group instruction in order to adapt the curriculum to the needs of each student.
  • Establishes and maintains standards of student behavior needed to achieve a supportive learning environment in the classroom.
  • Evaluates and maintains data on students’ academic and social growth, keeps appropriate records, and prepares progress reports.
  • Communicates with parents through conferences and other means to discuss student’s progress and interpret the school program.
  • Identifies student needs and collaborates with other professional staff members in assessing and helping students solve health, attitude, and learning problems.
  • Maintains professional competence through professional learning provided by the district and self-selected professional growth activities.
  • Supervises students in out-of-classroom activities as assigned during the working day.
  • Administers standardized tests and writes student evaluation reports to help determine special education eligibility.
  • Participates in curriculum development programs as required.
  • Other duties as assigned.
