About The Position

Assists the classroom teacher in delivering intervention and instruction to students with special needs by providing instructional, behavioral and personal care support. Performs related tasks as required and directed. All work is performed under the direction and supervision of the classroom teacher, however, the paraprofessional may independently carry out particular aspects of the instructional program when asked. This role is for the 26/27 School Year.

Requirements

  • Must meet the qualifications of “highly qualified” under No Child Left Behind Act of 2001: Has passed the Paraprofessional Assessment with a minimum score of 455 or Has a minimum of 48 college credits or A minimum of an Associate’s Degree.
  • High school diploma.
  • Previous experience working with groups of children.
  • Skills and knowledge in word and data processing software.
  • Ability to perform Safety Care intervention training.
  • Ability to develop and maintain an open and accepting attitude toward students with disabilities.
  • Willingness to learn specialized instructional/behavior management techniques employed with students with disabilities.
  • Ability to communicate and develop effective working relationships with students, parents, and staff.
  • Must be able to lift at least 50 pounds unassisted.
  • Frequent walking, standing, light lifting, up to 40 pounds, and other physical activities are required.
  • Dexterity of hands and fingers to assist/restrain students and to operate specialized equipment or office equipment.
  • Sitting or standing for extended periods of time.
  • Bending at the waist, kneeling or crouching to assist students.
  • Seeing to read a variety of materials and monitor student activities.
  • Hearing and speaking to exchange information.
  • Reaching overhead, above the shoulders and horizontally.
  • Lifting or moving children from wheelchair to tables or desks.
  • Must be able to work within various degrees of noise, temperature, and air quality.
  • Must be able to work under stressful conditions.
  • May be subject to physical and emotional outbursts by students, including such behaviors as hitting, kicking, spitting, scratching and biting.

Nice To Haves

  • Assignment placement may require additional training requirements such as and/or specific training on aspects of Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD).
  • Associate degree - CDA in Child Development preferred.
  • Prior experience working with groups of children.

Responsibilities

  • Performs Safety Care intervention training.
  • Provides classroom management and learning environment support.
  • Assists/restrains students and operates specialized equipment or office equipment.
  • Assists students by sitting or standing for extended periods, bending at the waist, kneeling or crouching.
  • Lifts or moves children from wheelchair to tables or desks.
  • Occasional travel with students on field trips.
  • Occasional movement of students by wheelchairs and other mechanical devices.
  • Occasional lifting of equipment weighing up to 50 pounds.
  • Physical participation in Safety Care intervention training.
  • Occasional attendance to parent conferences, building-level meetings and division wide meetings and training activities beyond normal assigned hours.
