About the position

The Special Education Assistant at Bryn Mawr Elementary provides a variety of services to assist students with special needs in a learning environment. This role involves supporting MPS staff in developing and implementing individualized lessons and activities for students with disabilities, specifically focusing on those with Autism (ASD). The assistant helps students meet their therapy and education goals under general supervision.

Responsibilities

  • Provides support services to children with moderate to severe disabilities enrolled in MPS.
  • Assists MPS staff to facilitate educational functions and maintain a safe, inclusive, and productive learning environment.
  • Works with students to improve personal skills and reinforce classroom learning.
  • Applies Prevent, Teach, Reinforce Behavior Intervention Plans and reinforces positive behavior.
  • Monitors student activities and promotes respect, explaining social norms and disciplinary consequences.
  • Records data for academic and behavioral assessments and maintains files of student progress.
  • Attends to students' daily hygiene and personal health-related cares as directed by licensed staff.
  • Promotes student independence in community, recreational, school, and leisure activities.
  • Reports learning problems and behavioral issues to supervisor or Principal.
  • Prepares the classroom environment and materials for student use.
  • Provides customer service to parents and guardians, answering questions and explaining school rules.
  • Maintains confidentiality of work-related issues and records.

Requirements

  • Completion of 90 quarter/60 semester college credits or a passing score of 460 (or higher) on the ParaPro Assessment.
  • High school diploma or GED certificate.
  • Two years of experience working with children or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.

Nice-to-haves

  • First Aid/CPR/AED certification.
  • Crisis Prevention Intervention (CPI) training.
  • Special Education Orientation training.

Benefits

  • Starting rate of pay: $23.91/hour.
