About the position

The Special Education Assistant I position at Medford School District 549C is a permanent role requiring 7 hours of work per day, starting immediately. The position is classified as nonexempt and involves assisting teachers in an instructional setting, with a focus on providing direct contact with students to facilitate learning. The role is open until filled and is expected to work on-site at two buildings on a rotating basis.

Responsibilities

  • Assists teacher in the instructional setting.
  • Maintains classroom discipline using appropriate methods for children with and without disabilities.
  • Organizes and manages student work under teacher direction.
  • Assists teachers in correcting and recording student work and in testing students.
  • Supervises class for short periods.
  • Assists students with daily work.
  • Reads aloud to students.
  • Assists students on computers and with various computer programs and testing programs.
  • Works directly with students with a variety of special needs.
  • Implements planned activities using teacher-designed methods and materials for individual and small student groups for instructional support.
  • Supervises various student activities, including the playground, cafeteria, bus loading and unloading, field trips, hallways, and other areas where students gather.
  • Prepares and provides clerical support to the teacher for instructional materials using various office equipment, resource materials, AV equipment, copying, faxing, etc.
  • Maintains accurate records and records gathered information within the scope of District policies and state and federal laws, maintaining strict confidentiality.
  • Obtains necessary instructional materials from a variety of sources.
  • Assists with toileting students who are incontinent or require assistance with catheterization or transfer.
  • Administers medications within the scope of District policies and state and federal laws, including diabetes management and insulin administration.
  • Assists with wheelchair transfers as required by student needs.
  • Implements Individual Education Plan (IEP) modifications at the teacher's request.
  • Schedules and assists with IEP meetings.
  • Maintains competency in all position responsibilities.
  • Complies with all safety and work rules, policies, and procedures.
  • Responsible for properly utilizing, operating, and maintaining all department resources.
  • Provides support to other positions as needed.
  • Assumes additional responsibilities as appropriate with little or no supervision.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • Must meet current highly qualified requirements.
  • Ability to interact appropriately with teachers, staff, community members, and students.
  • Ability to communicate verbally and in writing fluently in English; preference may be given to applicants fluent in English and Spanish.
  • Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, procedure manuals, and governmental regulations.
  • Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as discounts, interest, proportions, percentages, area, circumference, and area.
  • Ability to apply common sense understanding to complete instructions furnished in written, oral, schedule, or diagram form.
  • General knowledge of computer usage and ability to use database software, e-mail, internet software, spreadsheets, teaching software, and word processing software.
  • Certificates as determined by the District, including current NCLB requirements (paraprofessional certification).
