About The Position

Perform under the instruction of a certified special education teacher to provide for the emotional, behavioral, social, and instructional needs of students with disabilities in a special education setting. Assist in the implementation of classroom programs, including: behavior management, emotional regulation, social skills, and academic instruction. Specialized Behavior Support (SBS) Students accessing this instructional setting demonstrate significant behavioral and emotional challenges that require intensive support after all other efforts have been unsuccessful. This program addresses students’ academic and behavioral needs with highly individualized approaches and positive behavior supports. Social skills instruction is a critical curriculum component in SBS. Students have opportunities to interact with their typical peers to the fullest extent possible in an effort to reinforce the generalization of acquired skills.

Requirements

  • High School diploma or GED
  • Ability to work with children with emotional and/or behavioral disabilities
  • Ability to follow verbal and written instructions
  • Ability to communicate effectively with students, as well as special education and general education staff
  • Knowledge of general office equipment
  • Ability to collect accurate student data
  • Must be able to lift 25lbs.

Nice To Haves

  • Associate degree or two years of higher education preferred
  • If hired, must complete SBEC certification process to obtain an Educational Aide Certification

Responsibilities

  • Assist the teacher in preparing instructional materials.
  • Assist the teacher in preparing and maintaining the classroom organizational structure.
  • Assist the teacher in collecting individualized student data.
  • Provide orientation and assistance to substitute teachers.
  • Provide inclusion support in the general education and/or special education setting.
  • Assist the teacher in both verbal and physical de-escalation of students.
  • Assume responsibility for learning and adapting to each student’s individualized needs.
  • Work with individual students and/or small groups.
  • Assist in supervising students throughout the school day, inside and outside the classroom.
  • Maintain confidentiality.
  • Participate in staff development training programs and special events as assigned.
  • Assume shared responsibility for the health, safety, and confidentiality of all students and adults; which may include implementing, supporting, and documenting behavioral intervention strategies and/or providing school health, related, and personal care services.
