About the position
The primary purpose of this position is to assist the special education teacher in providing for the physical and instructional needs of students with disabilities in a special education setting. The aide will help implement classroom programs, which include self-help, behavior management, and instructional programs. This role operates under the general supervision of the principal and the immediate direction of a certified teacher.
Responsibilities
- Assist the special education teacher in meeting the physical and instructional needs of students with disabilities.
- Help implement classroom programs including self-help, behavior management, and instructional programs.
- Follow verbal and written instructions provided by the certified teacher.
- Maintain emotional control under stress and work with frequent interruptions.
- Assist in the physical handling of students, including lifting and carrying students up to 53 pounds.
Requirements
- Associate's degree or two years (48 hours) of study at an institute of higher learning, or have met formal academic assessment requirements.
- Valid Texas Educational Aide certificate recommended by the district upon hire.
- Ability to work with children with disabilities.
- Ability to follow verbal and written instructions.
- Ability to communicate effectively.
- Knowledge of general office equipment.
- Basic first aid knowledge and CPR certification.
- Prior experience working with children.
