About the position

The Special Education Behavioral Assistant plays a crucial role in supporting students with special needs within the Baldwin Park Unified School District. This position involves working closely with teachers to implement instructional and behavioral programs, ensuring that students achieve their learning and behavioral goals in a safe and supportive environment. The assistant will engage with students both in and out of the classroom, providing individualized support and monitoring behavior to foster a positive learning experience.

Responsibilities

  • Assist teachers in implementing instructional and behavioral programs for students with special needs.
  • Provide instruction to individuals or small groups in various areas including cognitive, motor skills, and behavior control.
  • Monitor and record student behavior on the school bus and in the classroom.
  • Utilize approved behavior management techniques to redirect inappropriate behaviors.
  • Observe and document student behavior to assist in implementing behavior plans and goals.
  • Assist students with arriving and leaving classrooms, ensuring their health and safety.
  • Operate lifts and secure students on the bus as needed, and attend field trips with students.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent is required.
  • Pass the BPUSD district instructional aide examination or have completed at least two years of study at an institution of higher education or possess an associate's degree or higher.
  • Experience working with children with disabilities is required.
  • Current First Aid and CPR certification issued by an authorized agency.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience in a classroom setting with special education students.
  • Familiarity with behavior management techniques and strategies.
